Your Oklahoma Cutting Garden: 5 Resilient Flowers to Start With
Hey there Flower Friend.
Who wouldn’t want to grow their own little slice of heaven in cutting garden form? I know that it can be intimidating, but I promise if you’ll give it a try I’ll help guide you along the way. Creating a cutting garden here in Oklahoma is one of the most rewarding adventures. You get to connect with the seasons and have your own fresh blooms right outside your door. The key is to choose varieties that can show up and handle the challenge of summer heat and thrive in our Oklahoma climate.
Here are my top 5 resilient stars for your Oklahoma cutting garden:
Zinnias: The undisputed champion of the summer cutting garden. They thrive on heat, bloom relentlessly from summer to frost, and come in every color imaginable. They are the ultimate cheerleader for any new gardener. There are new varieties coming out all the time and just seem to keep getting better every year.
Sunflowers (Branching Types): These Oklahoma natives don't just give you one flower per stalk. They branch out, providing weeks of blooms from a single plant. They are the happy face of our Oklahoma flower farm. Sunnies really are some of the easiest flowers to grow.
Gomphrena (Globe Amaranth): This tough little bloom is a must. Its clover-like flowers in pink, purple, and white hold their color perfectly, even when dried. It’s drought-tolerant and a pollinator favorite. I can’t seem to grow enough of these beauties to craft with in the fall and winter.
Celosia (Cockscomb & Plume): For stunning texture and vibrant color, celosia is unmatched. Its brain-like crested varieties or feathery plumes add incredible drama to arrangements and stand up to our hottest days. These are another workhorse for our Oklahoma summers, and I’ll never not have these in the field. They also are amazing for drying as well!
Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia): A true prairie beauty. These daisy-like flowers are perennial in many areas, meaning they come back year after year. They are tough, drought-resistant, and full of wildflower charm. I love growing the specialty varieties like Sahara, Cherry Brandy, and Cherokee Sunset. Beyond their beautiful blooms, wildlife love the seed heads in the fall and winter.
Start with these, and you’ll have a garden that’s not only beautiful but also remarkably hardy. Happy growing!
